Landslide Olongapo 2

Friday, October 14, 2016

As I write it is exactly 2 weeks ago that our place was hit by a landslide. The first week tons of mud, rocks, and trash were taken away. First from the back to the front and then taken out by a truck.

The 1st load that was taken out. 2nd is piling up now.
All the neighbours have left the compound and found another home. Only we and the landlord are able to stay here. It is not like it should be of course. There is no running water. Oh yes, there’s enough water still running from all the mud but the pipes of the city water are broken. We now use containers and water gallons which we can fill each day with the hose. Not what we could call comfortable but for the time being we have to deal with the situation. A bigger concern is the washing machine that is still floating in the mud. We only can hope that there is not too much damaged inside. On top of that, the refrigerator gave up last week. Lots of meat we had to throw out and we cannot store our goodies proper at the moment. Yet I still think we have been luckier than our –ex- neighbors. We did not have to move and for laundry, we have to walk 2 minutes only to the laundrette. Buying fresh food daily in the market is also not a bad thing.

Yesterday the workers in the back of the houses finally reached our place. At first, I didn’t understand why they were standing on –what I thought- was a pile of mud, right in front of our back door and shoveling their way towards the end from there. This morning my friend went out to have a look at the back, entering via the next house. After I saw the pictures he took I suddenly understood all. Behind our back door is not a pile of mud but a huge rock.

So many heavy rocks...
My guess is that they will have to drill the monster into smaller pieces in order to get it out. And looking at the picture all I could think of was that it really was a wonder that nobody –including the cats- was injured or even killed that fateful morning.

Tomorrow might be the big day that we can enter our backroom again and see what we can save from there. I am pretty sure we will have to have the clothes washed again since the air coming from the mud definitely did not give them a nice perfume. But that is just a minor problem right now.

Our laundry. So close, yet so far away.

Love the ones you’re with and be loved in return.
