Religious Oppression

Wednesday, June 15, 2016

Just when I was working on a blog “Religions versus LGBT” the horrifying news of the Orlando killing came in. The whole day I felt numb. Read as much as I could and I felt disgusted, sick and angry.

But of course, anger is the cause of many problems in this world, together with hatred. If we are looking for solutions we should not let anger be our guide. It is June now, the month where LGBT people all over the world ‘celebrate’ gay pride. This year there will not be much to celebrate. The Orlando's massacre shows us again that there is a lot of hate against gay people. It now turned out that the shooter himself was a regular visitor of the club The Pulse and he also was on at least one gay dating site. A lot is under investigation now so it is a bit tricky to draw conclusions already. Yet we can conclude that religion played a major role. The father was on television where he bluntly stated that he was against homosexuality. He also made very clear that he did not like America and proclaimed himself to be the ‘shadow-president’ of Afghanistan. There is only one word that describes the man best: Insane! This man now raised the shooter who was gay or at least bisexual too. Do not get me wrong here. The killer and nobody else was responsible for his horrible deed. No matter how you look at it, it was the religion again that had a great influence. Mind you, in Afghanistan, it is common to kill gay people. Thanks to the lovely Islam. As in many other countries. We all know about Iran where they have no problems hanging gay men. And what about ISIS? All based on Islam.

Basically, this goes for all religions. The Vatican still considers homosexuality a great sin. The pope condemned the shooting in Orlando but did not even mention the LGBT community. Like an ostrich, he stuck his ugly head in the sand. And still, victims ask us to pray. Why on earth should I pray to a god, who is said, condemns me? (See Lev. 20:13)  I am definitely not that masochistic. When will come the time that people start using their brains what it was meant for? When will come the time that people start to think instead of blindly following ‘authorities’ who do nothing but misuse their power? Power to oppress people. Because that is exactly what it is. It is not that I am totally against ‘believing’. It is well known that many people are strengthened by believing. It is the institution I have problems with. They try to force their own rules onto others. In secular countries too often politicians are motivated by their religion.

It should be about time that the LGBT members stand up and tell those religious leaders to take a stand. It is time to turn backs upon religions as long as they keep on condemning us. Why not grab the moment now, this month when so many go out in the streets, to claim our legal (human) rights? We need to let the Vatican and Muslim leaders know that enough is fucking enough. It’s time for the LGBT community to let them feel our Pulse! United we stand.

Love the ones you’re with and be loved in return.
